Announced just last week, MK-Studios has released their Kangerlussuaq, Greenland scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Part of a five-airport package, the scenery captures the isolation and vastness of Western Greenland in detail and provides flight simmers with challenging airports and breathtaking scenery to explore.
The main feature of the scenery is Kangerlussuaq Airport (BGSF), also known by its Danish name, Søndre Strømfjord. A hub for Air Greenland and one of only two civilian airports in Greenland big enough to handle large airliners, BGSF was once an important stopover and refueling point for early, piston airliners crossing the Atlantic. Air Greenland continues to operate scheduled service as well as charter and cargo flights from BGSF to other airports in Greenland, as well as Copenhagen and seasonal service to Billund in Denmark.
MK-Studios’ rendition of BGSF and the surrounding settlement features high-quality LiDAR data, 20cm/pixel satellite imagery, and over 150 custom buildings to create a lifelike representation of the area. The airport itself was designed with a detailed terminal complete with interior modeling, custom ground polygons with lines, dirt, markings, and other details, and realistic lighting for day and night operations.
In addition to BGSF, MK-Studios’ package includes custom buildings, plus high-quality satellite imagery and elevation data for four additional airports in Western Greenland; Sisimiut (BGSS), Maniitsoq (BGMQ), Qaarsut (BGUQ), and Aasiaat (BGAA). These airports feature paved and unpaved, gravel runways, difficult approaches, and ever-changing weather conditions. To add to the immersion of flying above the 60th parallel north, MK-Studios states that 3D snow and icebergs are also visible in the scenery depending on weather conditions.
